Award for Cecil Leighton at the Lederer

In 1956, a young man by the name of Cecil Leighton joined the London Association's committee and he has served it continuously ever since. At some stage during those 50 years, he has filled virtually every role on the committee and run almost all our competitons. The Association's early records are incomplete, so the earliest reference we have to a specific role is as a member of the league tournament committee in 1968 but, more recently, he was master points secretary, Chairman of the Association from 1978 to 1981 and membership secretary from 1993 until the beginning of this year. However, perhaps his greatest contribution, something he has done for more than half his 50 years on the Committee, has been to run the London Trophy (for teams from non-bridge clubs/organisations) from its inception in 1978 - and he is still doing it. With entries still running at 60 or 70 teams each year, it remains London's biggest and most successful competition.

This moment, unique in the history of the Association, could not be allowed to pass unnoticed so, during the 2006 Lederer Memorial Trophy, the Chairman presented Cecil with two framed bridge cartoons as a lasting memento of his contribution to bridge in London.
