BRIDGE NEWS FROM THE LMBA 2000-2001

Juliet Martin
Congratulations to David and Claire Martin on the birth of their daughter, Juliet Lauren, 7 lb 1 oz on 19th September 2001. Fantastic news and somehow, David, (your chairman), even managed to attend the committee meeting on Thursday 20th to tell us the good tidings!

George Baracs
Sadly, we report the death of George Baracs, aged 87, on August 6th, 2001. George had been a staunch worker on our committee, always ready to help, whatever the task.
Originally from Hungary, George had been a Partner with Mischon de Reya, the firm of London Solicitors. He had been a regular London club and tournament player for many years. In March this year, he was absolutely delighted to earn his promotion to 'National Master' status following our Wembley tournament, in partnership with his friend James Smith.
George was a kindly man, loved by all. He never had a bad word for anybody except for those who extended our committee meetings late into the night. He was always first to arrive. On one fairly recent occasion, he said to James before proceedings got under way, "I hope we can finish early tonight, I must get back to the TV to watch that Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct"!
George , we will miss you.
We offer our condolences to his family and friends.

Surrey Golf Bridge Tournament (2001)The Garfitt Clowes Cup

Your ex-chairman Mike Hill achieved a lifetime's ambition when he got a 'hole in one' on the par 3, 204 yard 16th hole at Tyrrells Wood Golf Club on 19th April 2001.He used a 3 wood. This feat cost Mike a few bob on drinks for all! As holder of the trophy from last year, Mike was playing with another 'dual' London member Mike Clack. In spite of 5 stableford points on this hole alone, the two Mikes failed to hang on to their title. The highest placed London player was Roger Morton playing with Surrey partner Pam Cox. They won the bridge after a recount by a narrow margin but with only an 'average'score in the golf, they finished 3rd overall.
Freddie Della-Porta

A memorial service was held on 21st March following the recent sad death of Freddie Della-Porta. In addition to being a London administrator and EBU Vice President for many years, Freddie was the inspiration behind the London Trophy, the knockout competition for non-Bridge Clubs, that currently has 150 teams entering.
If you are a member of a sports, social or business club, perhaps you could help to keep Freddie's dream alive by getting together a team from there and entering next season's London Trophy.
